Gracias
I wish we knew what Carter's comment would be. I expect he would provide an interesting perspective as well.
As with any President, he would have had to rely on his advisors to provide the full picture and projections.
As we now know of him, he would have been inclined to see the best in people. Who would have anticipated the treachery of the Ayatollah and Bin Laden? Hitler was appointed by the elected German President at the time, Americans elected Trump...
Would a totally objective AI have made a better decision on how to handle the situation in Iran? Would a fully informed AI have foreseen the situations there and in Afghanistan?
Thanks for this analysis. I didn't know any of Carter’s role in this part of history, although I remember those years, the wrap up of Vietnam, the shocking American hostage-taking by Khomeni. And omg the Russians in Afghanistan. And here we are today!
A very good piece illustrating the benefits of being on the ground when major events occur. It also raises in a nutshell complex issues of policy decision making and retrospective historical assessment.
The USA is always being blamed by people from the left and from the right.
The truth is the Iranian elite is the one that failed to see the need for reforms. When reforms are precipitated by major crisis’s the results can be disastrous.
Iran is a perfect example.
There are political events can be out of control because they obey to basic instincts.
I cannot share your judgement on Carter’s role in the fall of the Shah ‘s regime. The Shah was weak and that is his legacy.
Sorry Jean Paul. The Shah was weakened indeed, but Carter’s poor judgment and Pollyannish view of international relations were equally to blame. I served in Teheran from 1976-78 and saw both sides of the coin. Carter in 1978 was highly indecisive and chose the facile option of believing that Khomeini could be a democratic leader. Poor Iranians, poorly served by both leaders.
And of course the ayatollah’s regime has proven to be better than the Shah’s? Results matter and in this case, the results of Carter’s political judgment were comoletely wrong, and Iranians and the world are paying the price!

It seems his heart was in the right place but he just didn’t have the ability or logical mind to see the cold realities.
Indeed. A sad comment in his judgment.

Indeed, the history is amazing and the legacy mixed!
