I think like everyone else they are trying to read the tea leaves. Ford’s superficial diatribe was more influenced by the Canadian auto parts industry’s complaints that Mexico is allowing too much transit of Chinese auto parts to the US and Canada for OEM. No Chinese firms are currently manufacturing in Mexico. Ken Smith Ramos, Mexico’s chief negotiator during CUSMA, was highly critical of Ford’s outburst saying negotiations are the rational approach to these challenges. Trudeau agreed.
Excellent analysis of the situation. IMO Trump has not thought through the impact these goals and the process of achieving them. They were slogans in his presidential campaign designed to garner a maximum number of votes particularly amongst the Hispanic citizenry of the US. Larry Summers has clearly pointed out the inflationary impact of the deportation policy due to labour shortages. The various costs(financial and in lives)of fiercely fighting the drug cartels will only bring further deleterious economic and social effects on the US economy.
Added to that, Trump will face serious push back from President Sheinbaum in Mexico who I can’t see accepting any breach of its sovereignty in the fight against the drug cartels. A push to overthrow the incumbent regimes in Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela is probably beyond even the military means of the US given those countries tight relationships with China, Russia and Iran.
To all of this add the related domestic issues: a bunch of inexperienced and incompetent candidates for cabinet secretaries; a military which may be quite literally up in arms over the wholesale dismissal of senior officers; and Democratic governors who will forcefully resist his deportation policies.
However, Scheinbaum has the short end of the stick given AMLO’s relationships with the cartels and Trumps hatred of the free trade agreement. Indeed, this morning Dioug Ford called for the end of CUSMA since in his view Mexico is the entry point for Chinese products. Do Canadian Conservatives through their deep ties to the Trump circle know something about what is to come?
Good analysis of Trump 3 goals and consequences for Latin America. But he will stumble and fail to accomplish them as US administrations have also failed. Deporting 12 m Latino will prove too costly as will completely destroying drug cartels or the left wing regimes that have been around for decades to oppose US hegemonic influence
Wow! Sounds like a few more Haitis are about to emerge! Not sure how widely known those numbers are, but they have to be eye-openers for anyone who sees them.

Yes, but what does Mr Poilievre think? He will be Trump’s main beneficiary in Canada and Canada’s Trumpian closely advised by Trump loyalists.

In sum, where Trump treads, chaos ensues.
A complicated situation indeed. Interesting times.

They sure opened mine!
